I'm definitely going to check out shinkanji, but I wanted to mention that there's a great trick for looking up kanji in Kotoba!. Simple enable the iPhone's Chinese keyboard, and you'll be able to enter kanji by "drawing" with your finger in the keyboard area. The only drawback with this method is that switching between keyboards can be a little slow, and with one English, two Japanese and a Chinese keyboard to cycle through, well. Of course, it's still faster than switching apps.

Hello,
I am the author of shinkanji. I am glad that you are mentioning the application here, however I wanted to add that the screen shots and video are pretty old.
at http://www.youtube.com/user/benoitcerrina you will find many more recent videos. In particular those of the version 2.0 and 3.0
